C-SPAN Student Video Competition
by Meg Heubeck
September 25, 2009
Get in the game by having your students participate in C-SPAN's "Student Cam" national video documentary competition. Students in grades 6-12 can create their own 5-8 minute documentary that addresses an issue of national significance. This great activity could coordinate with YLI's 2009 Mock Election or with your yearly Democracy Corps project.
Students are being asked to produce a documentary on either one of the country's greatest strengths; or a challenge that is facing the nation. Students must present more than one point of view and include C-SPAN video in their documentary. There are great resources on health care and social security on the YLI website that can help your students prepare for this project that will enhance their classroom discussions of current issues.
The competition runs until January 20, 2010. C-SPAN is awarding a total of $50,000 in cash prizes. The top winning videos will air on C-SPAN, and can be viewed at www.studentcam.org.
