Each fall, the Youth Leadership Initiative (YLI) conducts the largest secure, student-only, online mock election in the nation, using electronic ballots tailored to each student's home legislative district. The 2010 Mock Election will run from October 18-28 with results being posted on October 29.

  • Students learn to participate in the electoral process by voting for real candidates.
  • Ballots include House and Senate races, and gubernatorial races for thirty-six states.
  • Comprehensive program includes supporting lesson plans on topics such as the foundations of American government, political ideology, the American electoral process, candidate comparisons, and much more. Lessons are aligned with each state's content standards in civics and government.
  • Online teacher resources also include downloadable posters, decorations and stickers to generate election excitement in your school.
  • Teachers may customize their ballots - for example by adding local or school races or by removing Congressional races.
  • Voting can occur anytime during the two week period allow scheduling flexibility.
  • Schools may choose online or paper ballot voting.
  • Results available online after the two-week voting ends.

In October 2008, more than one million students for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and schools abroad voted in YLI's largest-ever mock election. The 2009 Mock Election had students from thirty-eight states participating in races for governor (New Jersey and Virginia), online referenda and e-Congress bills.

THANK YOU!! Our school appreciates the opportunity to participate in the most important process students will ever engage in as a U.S. citizen. What a great way to draw our youth into the Democratic Process. We will do this again!!!!

Thank you for having the most organized and incredible online voting I have ever experienced as a teacher! The students received the most benefit - I think they will remain encouraged to be a part of an exciting process - citizenship and voting.
