SOCIAL STUDIES 21
YLI and West Virginia
The Youth Leadership Initiative through a grant provided by the Comcast Foundation has begun a three year commitment to educators across West Virginia called Social Studies 21.
YLI will host a series of FREE regional workshops and state conferences each year starting in the summer of 2010 and concluding in summer 2012.

2010 REGIONAL WORKSHOPS
Beckley, Tuesday, July 13 at RESA 1 – 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Huntington, Wednesday, July 14 at RESA 2 – 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Wheeling, Thursday, July 15 at RESA 6 – 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Martinsburg, Friday, July 16 at RESA 8 – 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Breakfast will be provided at each workshop.
2010 STATE CONFERENCE
Charleston, August 12 at Holiday Inn Charleston House – 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
At the regional workshops educators will receive an overview of YLI's
- Lesson Plans – Educators will participate in at least two of the most engaging lesson in YLIs collection of over 100.
- Mock Election – Learn about national online custom mock election with paper ballot option
- e-Congress – Congressional bill writing simulation
- Democracy Corps – Service learning program with emphasis on politics
- A More Perfect Union – YLI's senate campaign simulation CD-ROM game
In addition educators will be provided a copy of our latest poster among other items that you can use in your classroom.
Attendance and all resources associated with the workshops and state conference are FREE to all West Virginia educators, but
registration is required. The first 15 registrants that participate from each regional workshop will be provided lodging the
night prior to the state conference on August 12 should they choose to attend.
Space is limited so register now and be sure to participate!
At the state conference guest speakers include
- The Honorable Joe Manchin III, Governor of West Virginia
- Larry Sabato, Director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics and nationally known political prognosticator
- Brad Butler, NFL Player (Buffalo Bills) and civics education advocate
- Other speakers
Participants at the state conference will attend in-depth workshop sessions that focus on:
How to teach about topics related to current political issues - Discussions on topics such as
fiscal policy and health care can quickly become heated. This session will show how teachers can introduce such
topics in a non-partisan manner resulting is civil classroom discussions.
How to run a school-wide Mock Election - With the West Virginia elections approaching, YLI will
go in-depth on how educators can run a school-wide Mock Election complete with student forums, voter registration,
and classroom decorations. Whereas the region workshops will receive a Mock Election overview, this session will
teach all about getting the most out of YLI's Mock Election.
Connecting History and Civics - This session will focus on what teachers can do to successfully connect lessons in history and civics.
Attendance and all resources associated with the state conference are FREE to all West Virginia educators, but registration is required.
The first 15 registrants that participate from each regional workshop will be provided lodging the night prior to the state conference on August 12 should they choose to attend.
You do not have to attend a regional workshop to participate in the state conference.
